What to Know Before You Go

Visa & Entry
For VWP countries an ESTA is required ($21, applied online at least 72 hours pre-travel). Travelers from non-waiver countries need a B1/B2 visitor visa, with processing that can run several weeks. Submit early — visa demand will be elevated around the tournament.
For stays under 180 days no visa is needed for most passports. You receive an FMM tourist permit at the border, or fill it out online before departure. Attending matches in both Mexico and the US? You'll need separate entry permits for each.
Visa-exempt nationals need an eTA ($7 CAD, applied online). If your nationality requires a full visa, apply well in advance. Processing tends to be fast, with delays around large events. The eTA is bound to the passport you applied with and lasts 5 years.
Currency & Costs
USD is the currency. Credit and debit cards are taken pretty much everywhere. Tips are expected: plan on 18-20% in restaurants and $1-2 per drink at bars. Plan on $15-25 per meal at casual restaurants and $8-15 for fast food. Stadium food and drink pricing runs well above street prices.
Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN). USD is widely taken in tourist areas, but paying in pesos delivers better rates. Customary tipping runs 10-15%. A typical meal at local restaurants is $5-10 — Mexico is the most budget-friendly host. ATMs are widely available.
CAD is the currency. Card payments — contactless included — are accepted everywhere. Restaurants expect a 15-20% tip. Costs sit near US levels: budget $15-25 per meal. Note: displayed Canadian prices exclude tax, meaning your bill ends up 13-15% over the menu number.
Weather (June-July)
Expect big differences city-to-city. The south is hot and humid: Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C. The West Coast — LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C — runs milder and drier. East Coast venues (New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C) trend warm and humid. Pack sunscreen and a hat — and stay hydrated at outdoor venues.
Rainy weather sets in from June. Mexico City's 2,200m altitude keeps daytime temperatures moderate (around 25°C), with sharp evening cool-downs. Layered clothing and a rain jacket are essential. In Guadalajara and Monterrey expect 30-33°C and higher humidity. Expect frequent — but short — afternoon thunderstorms.
Peak weather of the calendar year. Toronto sits around 26°C, with bouts of humidity. Vancouver averages 22°C, sees up to 16-hour days, and gets little rainfall. Both Toronto and Vancouver suit outdoor events well. Light layers are recommended for evening kickoffs.
Practical Info
Type A/B outlets, 120V. English is the everyday language. Uber and Lyft cover the full host-city list. WiFi is generally free at hotels, cafes, and airports. Get an eSIM or prepaid SIM at the airport to handle mobile data. Transit varies sharply: New York is excellent; Dallas and Houston are limited.
Type A/B sockets, 127V (matching US). Spanish is the main language but English is commonly spoken in tourist zones and around the stadiums. Ride-hailing via Uber and DiDi works well across the three host cities. Pick up a local SIM (Telcel or AT&T Mexico) at the airport for cheap data and calls.
Type A/B outlets, 120V (US-compatible). English in Toronto, English plus French in Vancouver. Uber covers both cities. Transit is reliable; Toronto TTC and Vancouver SkyTrain each link to their stadium. Mobile plans in Canada are costly — visitors should look at an eSIM or prepaid SIM.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I book flights from Japan to the 2026 World Cup?

Target December 2025 through February 2026 for the widest JPY-denominated fare selection. JAL and ANA price economy in multiple buckets, and the cheapest typically clear by March as inbound US summer demand ramps up. For the group stage (11 to 27 June), February is safe. For knockouts through 19 July, January is safer — premium cabins on HND-JFK and HND-LAX sell out first, and once they do, economy prices ratchet up as well. Watch for ANA's seasonal sales in late January and JAL Mileage Bank promotions around New Year.

Haneda or Narita — which is better for the World Cup trip?

Haneda wins on convenience. HND is 30 minutes from central Tokyo on the Keikyu or Monorail, versus 60 to 90 minutes from Narita. Immigration queues at HND are generally faster on return. However, Narita usually holds the cheaper fare buckets on US routes — especially United, Delta and American. If you're flying JAL or ANA, pick HND for ease; if you're chasing the lowest fare on a Skyteam or Star Alliance US carrier, NRT will frequently win. KIX is your call if you're in Osaka, Kyoto or Kobe — direct service to LAX and SFO on JAL and ANA saves a domestic transfer.

Do Japanese passport holders need a US visa?

No. Japan is part of the Visa Waiver Program — apply for ESTA at esta.cbp.dhs.gov, USD 21, valid 2 years. Submit at least 72 hours before departure, not through third-party sites. For Canada, apply for an eTA online (CAD 7, valid 5 years). Mexico grants visa-free entry to Japanese passport holders for stays up to 180 days; the FMM tourist permit is issued on arrival. The Japanese passport is one of the strongest in the world — no additional paperwork beyond these three authorisations, and no interview required.

Which US airport is cheapest for following Samurai Blue?

Depends on Japan's group. Historically, the cheapest HND and NRT fares are to LAX, SFO and SEA — all West Coast gateways with deep Japanese community links and high frequency competition. JFK and EWR are more expensive but put you near MetLife Stadium for the final. ORD, DFW and IAH are mid-country options that price well mid-week. If Japan's group is on the West Coast, LAX or SFO keeps everything in one time zone. For East Coast matches, consider flying to SFO and connecting on United — sometimes cheaper than a direct HND-EWR when fare buckets have closed.

Can I use ANA Mileage Club or JAL Mileage Bank miles for award seats?

Possible, but tight. Star Alliance and oneworld award availability to the US on peak World Cup dates was already thin in the months leading up. If you hold ANA or JAL miles, book the moment the 355-day schedule opens (ANA opens 355 days out, JAL opens 360 days out) and consider a one-way award paired with a paid return. For flexibility, United MileagePlus on a partner award sometimes shows Star Alliance space that ANA's own tool does not — price both before committing.

How does the time difference affect match-day preparation?

Japan is 13 to 17 hours ahead of the US host cities. Eastbound to the West Coast (LAX, SFO, SEA), you land the same calendar day you left — your body wants to sleep around local afternoon. Give yourself 2 to 3 days on the ground before a match. East Coast arrivals (JFK, EWR, MIA, ATL) add another 3 hours on top. For knockout-round travel with short turnarounds, light therapy on the flight and melatonin (legal over-the-counter in the US, prescription-only in Japan) help reset. The return leg is brutal — plan a buffer day in Tokyo before resuming work.

What travel insurance do I need for the USA?

Buy a policy with at least USD 100,000 medical cover and explicit United States inclusion. Japanese National Health Insurance does not extend to the US, and a single emergency room visit can easily run JPY 2 to 5 million. Popular Japanese insurers (Tokio Marine, Sompo, AIG) offer World Cup-ready trip plans with 24-hour Japanese-language support. Confirm cancellation coverage in case FIFA moves a fixture — they reserve that right — and check whether your credit card already includes basic trip insurance, which can offset the premium.
